Bubbles!
Grayson loves bubbles. We go through gallons and gallons of solution each year - especially during the summertime where our bubble machine runs nearly non-stop. Our neighbors are all understanding of our situation, and thankfully they all love bubbles and often contribute with bubble solution! Living in a small town is funny because one day the bubble machine was going, and one of the garbage collectors who was running our neighborhood route texted me to tell me that the bubbles had filled our entire neighborhood.
They hold a lot of meaning for us, because bubbles were used as the first thing in speech therapy to help us connect with Grayson. And then when we worked with our therapist through The Play Project. And when we brought Easton home from the hospital, Mike used bubbles to keep Grayson occupied. It was during one of those bubble playing moments that I first saw Grayson flap his hands in excitement. That's when I started wondering about autism.
Fast forward nearly eight years later, and I am hoping that this idea I found online: SLP Talk with Desiree: Blowing Bubbles for Autism - will help spread awareness of developmental disabilities through our area schools.
This is my big project right now. I found this idea through a Pinterest search (so original!) and then I sent it to both Grayson and Easton's teachers - and both of them loved the idea. Each school is doing something different to celebrate developmental disabilities - and then at the end of their week they are going to have a massive bubble-blowing event - the idea is that bubbles can be enjoyed by everyone.
It's really taken off - and it's been so exciting! We have had our local disability advocacy group sponsor the lionshare of the bubbles because so many of them have been donated!
Right now nearly all of the local schools in our country will be participating in our bubble blowing event! I am super excited about it and a little overwhelmed because honestly I am having a really hard time thinking or planning or coordinating. I am afraid of missing something or making someone upset or unintentionally leaving someone out. It's been a long time since I had to do anything outside the scope of just momming so...it's been a fun and challenging experience!
Every single day we have boxes of bubbles arrive at our door. It's the most wonderfully, colorfully, rainbow-y thing - the perfect cure for winter doldrums.
Will you join us in blowing bubbles? Our area schools are participating on two different dates - March 25th and April 1st but you can do it whenever!
